Infertility is the inability to conceive a child in spite of repeated attempts. Infertility may be the result of a single cause or a combination of multiple causes, in either partner.

Normally, it is a happy event for any couple to have a child; failure to do so can sometimes harm a relationship as well as both the individuals on an emotional level. It is important in such cases to think clearly and take all necessary measures and treatments to ensure a pregnancy.

  • There are no specific symptoms of infertility, but a pregnancy is usually achieved within six to twelve months of trying.
  • Failure to do so for longer could be a case of infertility, and consultation of a doctor is necessary

The causes of infertility may be either only the male, only the female, or both.Causes of male infertility are

  • Abnormal sperm count and production
  • Problems with sperm delivery
  • Over exposure to chemicals and/or radiation

Causes of female infertility are

  • Ovulation disorders
  • Damage to reproductive organs (uterus, Fallopian tubes, endometrium)
  • Pelvic adhesions
  • Thyroid problems
  • Cancer treatment

Other risk factors include lack of physical fitness, addictions, etcTestsMany tests are conducted to analyze infertilityIn males

  • Semen analysis
  • Hormone testing
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • Testicular biopsy

In females

  • Ovulation testing
  • Hysterosalpingography
  • Hormone testing
  • imaging tests
  • Laparoscopic tests

Treatments depend upon the cause of infertility

In men, infections may be treated with antibiotics or other medications

For physical defects, such as a problem in the vas deferens, surgical methods may be used, in which the doctor uses surgical grafts in addition to medications to ensure proper working

In women, there are several therapies to enhance ovulation, including medication as well as surgery

Surgical methods include removal of any outgrowth that may be blocking the path of the egg cell from the Fallopian tube to the Uterus, or cysts on the inside of the uterus, etc. The surgery may be open or may be performed using a laparoscope

In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves retrieving eggs from the woman, fertilizing it in a lab with the sperm, and then planting the embryos into the uterus. The fertilized egg then grows into the fetus.

Post Treatment

Usually, if the treatment is successful, a pregnancy is achieved within 6 months of trying again.

It is, however, important to keep the doctor reported regularly
