What is TVT-O Surgery?

Causes

  • Urinary incontinence is caused due to sagging of the urethra

  • Sagging may be due to various reasons, such as age, physical health, injury, etc.

  • The surgery is performed to restore the urethra to its original state, and to keep it that way for as long as possible

  • Sometimes, it may be due to infection to the bladder itself

Length

  • The surgery takes 10-15 minutes to perform, and the patient may leave for home the same day itself

Preparation

  • The patient will have to undergo blood tests, ECG, etc to ensure overall health

  • The patient may be given oral or vaginal oestrogen, to thicken the vaginal tissue, thereby aiding surgery as well as healing

  • The surgery is performed with the patient under effect of an anesthetic

  • The patient is asked to have a void bladder for a few hours before the surgery

Procedure

  • The doctor will make two small incisions in the groin, and a slightly longer one on the anterior vaginal skin

  • The tape is then inserted through these incisions and the bladder neck is held in this tape

  • The tape literally acts as a sling to the bladder neck

Post surgery

  • The patient may experience slight nausea, pain from the wound, or problems related to anesthesia.

  • The patient will have a urinary catheter inserted into the bladder, which will be removed at the end of the day.

  • The patient can go home the next morning.

Follow up

  • The doctor should be reported to after one week, one month, six months and yearly as per the observations and recovery.

  • The patient is advised not to engage in sexual activities for at least a month.

  • The patient is not supposed to lift heavy loads or to put stress on the back.
